Technique & Composition

Vocal performance classes provide students with a hands-on opportunity to learn valuable performance techniques from professional vocalists. Students sing with professional accompanists in preparation for an end-of-quarter performance open to the public. Classes focus on a variety of styles including jazz, Latin, R&B and blues. Students interested in learning how to make charts, select repertoire, establish keys and count off tunes are encouraged to start with the beginning level vocal jazz performance classes. This will create a solid foundation for all genres. Students may consult directly with the instructors or contact the vocal program director with any questions about classes and workshops by emailing laurie@cjc.edu

The Word

“John Gove is an incredible professor with extensive knowledge in jazz theory. He teaches theory how it should be taught, which is direct application to your instrument in a playing context. I’ve never taken a better theory class with such a fine professor.”
