Noel Jewkes and Larry Vuckovich

Noel Jewkes and Larry Vuckovich FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11, 8 PM

Saxophonist Noel Jewkes and pianist Larry Vuckovich come together with bassist Doug Miller and drummer Chuck McPherson to perform rare standards, originals, plus the music of the tenor giants: Coleman Hawkins, Lester young, Don Byas, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Stitt, Paul Gonsalves, Hank Mobley and John Coltrane. This is a seldom heard program by the legendary West Coast tenor saxophonist presenting this unique repertoire.

Noel Jewkes is one of the premier saxophone players in Northern California. He has worked in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 35 years, and has earned a distinguished reputation with lovers of jazz music. Jewkes has that special ability to authentically interpret the sound, feeling and a style of the tenor greats. Listening to the majestic phrasing and harmonic adventurousness of Noel Jewkes is almost like hearing the entire history of modern jazz in a single evening. No wonder he is revered by musicians, critics, and music lovers alike as the premier Saxist-by-the-Bay.

Pianist Larry Vuckovich has won acclaim from critics and jazz audiences for his deeply imaginative style and repertoire heard at prestigious North American and European jazz clubs, concert halls and festivals. He is equally at home in world music/classically influenced modal jazz as he is with hard-swinging bebop, post-bop, contemporary jazz, and down-home blues. The New York Times notes that his unique outlook and collection of influences “set him apart from most pianists who are heard regularly in New York”.

Doug Miller has toured and performed with James Moody, Count Basie, and the Ellington Orchestra. “A world class bassist” – John Clayton

A top New York based drummer who has personally studied with Max Roach and Art Blakey, Chuck McPherson has toured and performed with Freddie Hubbard, Roberta Flack, Harold Land, and was a member of Horace Silver’s last band.
