Jazz musicians use many different strategies to create melodic lines in soloing: chord notes, diatonic and chromatic passing and neighbor tones, patterns based on scales and/or modes, upper structure triads and other intervallic constructions, playing in the key, pentatonic and other more exotic scales etc. Lucky for us, there are as many thoughts as there are musicians. Debbie will present an overview with examples of as many of these strategies as she can in two hours!
Pianist Debbie Poryes has performed at Yoshi’s, the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, Bim House and Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and New Morning in Paris. She has released several albums as a leader, with over 30 years of experience teaching privately and at conservatories in the U.S. and Europe.
