This workshop is designed to help saxophonists develop and refine their approach to sound production. Topics include equipment (saxophone selection, physics of the instrument, mouthpiece and reed combinations), embouchure (classical vs. jazz, loose lip vs. firm lip) and articulation (as appropriate for various styles). Practice techniques for sound development are covered (long tones, overtone and altissimo exercises and more). Other sound-related techniques are addressed such as bending notes and multiphonics, with the goal of adding nuance, depth, flexibility and expressiveness to your tone.
Saxophonist Marcus Stephens has appeared and recorded with ensembles including The Evan Francis Group, The Marcus Shelby Orchestra, The Mitch Marcus Quintet+15 and the Jazz Mafia. He can be frequently heard with the Kev Choice Ensemble (Lauryn Hill, The Coup), Rayband, the Souls of Mischief and Myron & E, as well as with his own Markstep Trio. Marcus continues to chart new territory with Secret Sidewalk, featured in the LA-based electronic music series Low End Theory.
