A step by step approach to constructing effective walking bass lines over standard jazz harmony. Recommended for pianists, arrangers, and anyone interested in developing a better understanding of the function of the bass in the jazz rhythm section. Open to all, no bass playing experience required!
Rob Ewing is the director of the Jazzschool Community Music School. He works with several Bay Area jazz groups including the Marcus Shelby Orchestra and Disappear Incompletely – The Radiohead Project.
A workshop for jazz vocalists who have wondered how to make a duet with a fellow singer really work and be as fun and spontaneous as the “pros” make it look on stage!
Many of you are gigging now and occasionally you may want to pair up with a fellow singer to share the fun, the band, the expenses and to benefit from a shared audience.

Greta Matassa is one of the most talented singers working in jazz today. She has been voted “Northwest Vocalist of the Year” by Earshot Jazz six times in 15 years!. Greta’s latest album “I Wanna be Loved” Resonance Records remained on the national jazz charts for radio airplay for 3 months. This new release features arrangements by Tamir Hendelman. She is surrounded by a host of top LA musicians and string orchestrations. Greta has been a mainstay on Seattle’s Jazz stages for many years and with her recent successful dates at New York’s Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center, tours of Russia, Singapore and Hawaii and Japan, Greta’s sound is now reaching new audiences. Greta has released seven CD’s on the respected jazz label Origin Records and a DVD live concert with guitarist Mimi Fox. Greta is also a respected and generous teacher. She offers private lessons locally and nationally, via Skype. She is on the faculty of many of the nations jazz festivals as a performer and clinician.

Take the stage and sing the blues with a killer band! Hosted by acclaimed vocalist Pamela Rose, this special Jazzschool vocal jam session is open to all singers. Please arrive by 6:30 to sign up to sing. No charts needed, but singers should be prepared to explain the form of their song in a few words (e.g. “12-bar blues in the key of F, shuffle”).
Pamela Rose is a San Francisco jazz and blues vocalist and educator who thrills audiences locally and internationally with her swinging, soulful style. Rose is that rare breed of entertainer who connects solidly with her audience by always delivering a personal and unforgettable musical experience. Pamela’s Blues Vocal Workshops at the Jazzschool are always filled to the brim, and she loves teaching singers how to sit in with blues bands!

Garth Webber is a legendary blues guitarist. He has toured and performed with Gregg Allman, Bill Champlin, Lydia Pense, Pamela Rose, Robben and Mark Ford, Miles Davis and Mose Allison, among others.
Chicago born Willie Riser is the first call bassist for touring blues legends Otis Clay, Carla Thomas, Lady Bianca, Frank Biner, Jules Broussard, Jackie Payne, & Ernie Johnson.
Drummer Rob Rhodes is a regular Jazzschool Blues Vocal Funshop accompanist, and has performed with Ledisi, Mary Wilson, Ed Kelly, Roy Obiedo, Denise Perrier and Faye Carol.
