Jorrit Dijkstra

Jorrit Dijkstra SUNDAY, JULY 28, 2 PM

This workshop helps develop skills that are often overlooked, such as how to respond to fellow musicians, train your musical reactions and generate original improvised ideas. Activities in this exciting, interactive workshop include ear training exercises, musical games and a variety of short improvisation assignments. Recommended for all musicians interested in developing a fresh approach to improvisation in any style of music.

Saxophonist and composer Jorrit Dijkstra’s current projects include The Whammies play the Music of Steve Lacy, with leading Chicago, Boston and Amsterdam improvisers, and an electro-acoustic duo with celebrated drummer/composer John Hollenbeck. He has released 12 albums as  a leader and collaborated with many top European and American musicians including Tony Malaby, Gerry Hemingway, Herb Robertson, Barre Phillips, John Butcher, Willem Breuker and Han Bennink. Dijkstra is currently on faculty at Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory in Boston.

J³ Trio / Yehudit Unplugged

Double Bill! SUNDAY, JULY 28, 4:30 PM

The adventurous sax, bass and drums collective J³ Trio aims to expand upon tradition and break convention in their original music. Featuring Jesse Levit, alto sax; Josh Thurston-Milgrom, bass; and Jake Shandling, drums. A native of Oakland, Jesse Levit is one of the hottest up-and-coming saxophone players around. After winning numerous honors and being chosen for both the SFJAZZ High School All-Star Band and the Monterey Jazz Festival All-Star Band, he has had the opportunity to share the stage with such greats as James Moody, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Daniels, Peter Erskine, Sam Rivers, Lenny Pickett, Khalil Shaheed, Mark Levine, Benny Green, Stefon Harris, Seamus Blake, and Rufus Reid. By the time he was eighteen, he had been recorded on three CDs: Oaktown Jazz, Pocketized, and Excursions. He performs regularly on sax and keys with the JRo Project and with his group, the Jesse Levit Trio, in numerous venues around the Bay Area and beyond.

Violinist Yehudit (pronounced “yeah who DEET”) is making a place for herself in the forefront of the jazz mainstream, following in the footsteps of jazz violinists from Jerry Goodman to Jean Luc Ponty. A classically trained player with a solid grounding in jazz, her credits include the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra and the jazz/blues band John Handy with Class. Performing on electric and acoustic five-string violins, she produces a varied sonic palette, ranging from boppish licks and wails to warm, singing melody. Her music is firmly rooted in straight-ahead jazz, spiced with blues, free improvisation, and a dash of funk.
