The sound of your kit is equally, if not more important than the notes you play on it. This workshop addresses proper tuning, head combinations, muting and muffling techniques, hardware issues, quick fixes, and advances in new equipment. All participants are encouraged to bring a drum, a drum key and open ears!
Drummer Alan Hall has performed with Kenny Werner, Taylor Eigsti, Eddie Harris and countless others, including several seasons with Cirque Du Soleil. He is endorsed by Zildjian, Aquarian and Vic Firth and is the author of Internalization, an innovative jazz drumming method book.
Prepare to be amused, amazed and totally besotted with the wonderful lyrics of Sammy Cahn. He was nominated for 23 Academy Awards, five Golden Globes, an Emmy and a Grammy. Cahn wrote romantic lyrics for the songs “All The Way,” and “I Fall in Love Too Easily.” He wrote swingers like “Come Fly With Me,” “I Should Care,” and “Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow,” and countless others sung by all the jazz and pop greats. In this 3-part workshop we’ll explore the music of several different composers all with lyrics by Cahn. We’ll also listen to how some jazz greats have interpreted these songs and get ideas for our own arrangements. Instructor provides 10 lead sheets for songs including practice-backing tracks. An accompanist joins the group during the third session, for students to perform arrangement ideas.
A warm, charismatic stage performer and accomplished musician, Maye Cavallaro has traveled extensively in Japan and the U.S., both performing and teaching. As Dorothy Parker once said, “I hate writing, I love having written.” Song writing can feel the same way, but it can also be one of the most rewarding forms of self-expression. This workshop, led by twin brothers David and Daniel Bailen with pianist Pierre Piscitelli, explores the construction of a melody and how it relates to song structure. Drawing from classic standards from the American songbook up to modern popular music, The Bailen Brothers string a thread through common trends and provide tools one can use to build a melody and create hooks. In this workshop you will hear the deconstruction of both original and classic compositions as they pertain to melody and song structure, and you will even have the opportunity to write a song of your own with the group.
