Jacam Manricks Trio

Jacam Manricks

Jacam Manricks THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 8 PM

Post contemporary New York jazz saxophonist and composer Jacam Manricks will present music from his latest album Cloud Nine.  The unique sound of his music is represented through original works, which incorporate soulful melodies, sophisticated harmonies, elaborate orchestrations, and driving rhythms influenced by jazz, contemporary classical, and Latin music. Featuring Jacam Manricks on saxophone, Andrew Emer on bass and Greg Wyser Pratt on drums.

Sri Lankan and Portuguese Australian born saxophonist and composer Jacam Manricks was raised in an extremely musical family.  His parents were resident classical musicians in the state symphony in his hometown of Brisbane and his grandfather was a famous Portuguese jazz clarinetist and saxophonist in Sri Lanka.  As a child Jacam frequently attended his parents’ symphony concerts and was introduced to jazz at home through his father’s’ jazz record collection. Due to these surroundings, Jacam was able to build a diverse musical foundation from a young age that combined jazz and classical music, two genres that continue to influence his music today. Jacam began studying piano at age 5 and the alto saxophone at 9. His formal musical training continued in New York in 2001, culminating with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in jazz composition, performance and pedagogy from the Manhattan School of Music in 2007.

Andrew Emer is a California native currently residing in New York City. He grew up studying with legendary jazz bassist Charlie Haden and 2nd chair LA Philharmonic bassist Peter Rofe. In 1998 he moved to New York city where he has had the pleasure of performing and touring with various jazz and rock groups. Emer has performed with Lee Konitz, Billy Higgins, Donald Byrd, Michael Cain, Jeff Ballard, Tony Sher, Kenny Wollesen, Phil Rowen, Chris Cheek, Waddada Leo Smith, Buddy Collett, Carl Allen, Mike Clark, Bruce Forman, Will Bernard, Josh Jones, Adam Theis, John Popper (Blues Traveler), Slide Hampton and Stephen Perkins of Janes Addiction.
