Tony Owen, Aaron Hipschman & Chris Sullivan

Tony Owen & Aaron Hipschman

Tony Owen, Aaron Hipschman & Chris Sullivan • FRIDAY, MAY 16, 7 PM

California Jazz Conservatory students Tony Owen, Aaron Hipschman and Chris Sullican present their final projects.

Guitarist Tony Owen brings a collection of work composed during his time as a CJC student. The tunes borrow themes from many musical traditions, including swing, Brazilian, modal jazz, R&B, and funk. Styles are blended in a fresh new way that is reflective of the cultural melting pot that is the Bay Area. Featuring Tony Owen on guitar, Chris Sullivan on saxophone, Patrick Malabuyo on trombone, Casey Mattson on piano, Tommy O’Mahony on bass, Nick de Ryss on drums.

Drummer Aaron Hipschman will be paying homage to the jazz greats while sharing the stage with some of his friends and teachers. Featuring Parker Grant on piano, Glenn Richmond on bass and guest soloists.

Aaron Hipschman grew up in Palo Alto, California. At Gunn High School he started playing the drums and getting interested in music, especially heavy metal, forming his own band. During the summer of 2006 he went to the Stanford Jazz Camp where he had a chance to learn from greats like Taylor Eigsti, Joshua Redmond, Barry Harris, Jeff Ballard, and Bill Stewart, and that was his summer of love with jazz. He formed his own jazz band his senior year and they played venues in the bay area. When he went to the Berklee School of Music five-week summer program in 2009 it was a wake up call. Getting a chance to play with very talented students and study with master teachers like Ralph Peterson and Terry Lynn Carrington was inspiring and sealed his commitment to music as a profession. In 2010 he began studying at the California Jazz Conservatory, dedicated to mastering percussion and branching out into piano and composition. In 2013 he got a chance to live in Matanzas Cuba for two weeks where he studied the history, culture and unique rhythms of Cuban percussion. Aaron graduates with a degree in Music from the California Jazz Conservatory in May 2014 and will continue to pursue a music career.

Chris Sullivan has emerged as a promising young saxophonist. He has developed a  bi-coastal network of friends and musicians, having lived in San  Francisco, Boston, and New York. Upon completion of his degree at the  CJC, Sullivan plans on returning to the east coast to continue developing as an artist while he pursues a master’s degree in jazz performance.
