Trumpeter and composer Ian Carey has been performing with his adventurous quintet for over ten years, and has released three acclaimed albums including last year’s Roads & Codes, which featured an expanded “+1″ format (and was included in Down Beat’s “Best of 2013″ issue). For this performance, the group will be premiering Carey’s “Interview Music: A Suite for Quintet+1,” made possible by the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music’s Musical Grant Program, as well as music from the group’s albums, including original compositions and arrangements of music by Charles Ives and Neil Young. Sara Gazarek and Josh Nelson have been collaborating for ten years; composing, arranging, touring, recording and teaching. Recently cited as “one of the best modern-day piano/voice matches,” they discuss ideas related to vulnerability and strength in a duo setting and provide information on arranging, listening and getting to the heart of the lyric. Mark Levine is the author of The Jazz Piano Book, The Jazz Theory Book, and The Drop 2 Book. He has performed with Woody Shaw, Mongo Santamaria, Joe Henderson, Willie Bobo, Bobby Hutcherson, Freddie Hubbard, Cal Tjader, Wallace Roney, Tito Puente, Milt Jackson, David Liebman and many others.
Many jazz musicians draw a blank when confronted with diminished or whole-tone chords. Sure, you may know how to spell them, but it doesn’t sound like jazz! This workshop addresses all aspects of the two chords including chord theory, scale theory, the various functions of the two chords in jazz, four-notevoicings, and voice leading. Mark Levine also explores how jazz greats such as Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk and Barry Harris effortlessly used these much misunderstood chords.

This interactive workshop with critically acclaimed Cuban pianist Aruán Ortiz is designed for students and teachers interested in spontaneous composition and structural manipulation over all kinds of musical and non-musical materials. Participants discuss, play, examine examples and analyze in detail the following topics: The importance of rhythm in improvisation, melodic and rhythmic motif development, real time composition applied to improvisation, and Afro-Cuban patterns in odd meters. He has received a number of awards such as Doris Duke Impact Award (2014) Latin Jazz Corner’s Arranger of the Year (2011) for his contribution on the album, “El Cumbanchero” (Jazzheads 2011) by flutist Mark Weinstein; Best Jazz Interpretation, Festival de Jazz in Vic, Spain (2000); and Semifinalist, Jas Hennessy Piano Solo Competition, Montreux, Switzerland (2001).
