About The Jazzschool at CJC

The Jazzschool at CJC is the California Jazz Conservatory’s community education program, providing music education and performance opportunities for over 20 years to instrumentalists and vocalists of all ages and at all levels of ability.

JAZZSCHOOL-ONLINE now offers over 100 live, interactive Classes and Workshops for adults and youth in its Fall 2020 Quarter, starting the week of September 21st. These Real-Time-Online Classes and Workshops offer opportunities to learn to play and improve your skills, with the same level of world-class music instruction you’ve received from the Jazzschool for over 20 years. You’ll learn, listen, practice, play, and interact in real-time with your instructor and classmates.

The Jazzschool at CJC
The Jazzschool at CJC offers online and on-site Classes every quarter for beginning, intermediate and advanced instrumentalists and vocalists. Levels range from covering basic technique and instrumental skills to focusing on more advanced topics, including jazz style, harmony, improvisation and more. (no audition required; some classes require faculty approval)

  • Jazzschool Instrumental Classes provide study of a specific instrument including saxophone, piano/keyboard, guitar, bass and drums/percussion, depending on the quarter.
  • Jazzschool Vocal Classes provide an opportunity for singers at all levels to improve style and technique. Performance classes are offered in jazz, Latin, blues, R&B and pop genres. Beginners, singers returning to music, and more advanced vocalists will find opportunities appropriate for their particular interests.

 (no audition required)
The Jazzschool offers a variety of Workshops throughout the year, available in single sessions or as a series. Whether online or on-site, Jazzschool Workshops are taught by professional artists/educators and focus on specific approaches to technical ability, theoretical concepts, improvisation, and enhancing live performance skills.

Jazzschool-Online Virtual Performance Ensembles
Jazzschool-OnlineVirtual Performance Ensembles combine online class meetings, using Zoom, with collaborative web-based recording projects, using an online digital audio workstation (DAW) called Soundtrap. The ensembles do not play together in real-time, but rather, build arrangements collectively through a process of overdubbing. Open to all instrumentalists and vocalists.

Online Young Musicians Program
The Jazzschool Young Musicians Program offers online Classes for beginning, intermediate and advanced middle and high school instrumentalists and vocalists, focusing on improvisation, style and repertoire. Note: Young Musicians Program ensembles have been postponed and will be reconvened when conditions allow us to resume on-site programs.

Camps and Intensives
Jazzschool Camps and Intensives are offered in the Spring and Summer in one and two week sessions for adult and youth instrumentalists and vocalists of all levels of ability.

Please Note: Piano Intensive, Sax Intensive and Vocal Intensive have been postponed and will be reconvened when conditions allow us to resume on-site programs. Please check back for updates on 2020 programs.
