About the California Jazz Conservatory

Founded in 2009, the California Jazz Conservatory (CJC) is the only independent, accredited music conservatory in the country devoted solely to the study and performance of the African American art form, jazz, and related styles of music.

The California Jazz Conservatory offers instrumentalists and vocalists a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies; an Associate of Arts in Jazz Studies; and a Master’s Degree for the 21st Century Jazz Composer-Performer.

The California Jazz Conservatory offers students:

  • A synergistic, comprehensive jazz education and performance program for today’s professional jazz instrumentalist and vocalist
  • Small classes taught by professional artist-educators in the field of jazz and related styles of music
  • Classes taught live, and interactive, in Real-Time-Online, using programs such as JackTrip, Jamulus, and other bleeding edge technology
  • Opportunities to study with local and visiting preeminent, internationally acclaimed artist-educators
  • Performance opportunities at prominent Bay Area venues (when circumstances allow); workshop opportunities with resident faculty and visiting artists
  • Access to important networking opportunities

The CJC campus is located in two buildings on Addison Street in the heart of the Downtown Berkeley Arts District, with many arts and performance venues nearby. Public transit, located within a block of CJC, offers easy access to the San Francisco Bay Area’s arts, entertainment, cultural and performance offerings.

The Jazzschool at CJC, the Conservatory’s community music school, offers classes and workshops for instrumentalists (piano & keyboard, guitar, bass, drums & percussion, saxophone, brass) and for vocalists, focusing on performance, theory, musicianship, improvisation, composition, history, culture, aesthetics, and the music business. The Jazzschool at CJC also offers a Young Musicians Program, with classes and workshops for beginning, intermediate and advanced young musicians.

“The California Jazz Conservatory is an exceptional institution, fostering the next generation of artists and educators, many on the cutting edge, performing, composing, teaching and touring throughout the world.”
