Beginning Saxophone

Overview

An introduction to the saxophone utilizing simple ensemble arrangements to get a head start on fingerings, sound production and reading in a fun and musical way. All saxophones are welcome! Prerequisites: None, but instructor consultation is required.

COURSE TITLE:  Beginning Saxophone

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

An introduction to the saxophone utilizing simple ensemble arrangements to get a head start on fingerings, sound production and reading in a fun and musical way. All saxophones are welcome!

COURSE PREREQUISITES: None. Students must own saxophone.

COURSE PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES: At the end of the course, students should be at a basic-to-intermediate level of reading and playing.

COURSE OUTLINE:

Week 1

Basic embouchure, music notation and fingerings.  Reading 1 or 2 pieces of music

Week 2

Beginning scales, more work on fingerings, 1 or 2 more pieces of music

Week 3

Continuing to work on music, including simple improvisation

Week 4

Continue to work on music, reading, scales & improvisation

Week 5

Continue to work on music, reading, scales & improvisation

Week 6

Continue to work on music, reading, scales & improvisation

Week 7

Continue to work on music, reading, scales & improvisation

Week 8

Decide on concert program and start preparing the music

Week 9

Begin playing straight through the pieces for the concert

Week 10

Final run through of concert music
