Intermediate Jazz Drumming

Caribbean-Sensibility

Overview

An in-depth look at the musical tools, knowledge and skills needed to become a solid jazz drummer. We will look at jazz comping, soloing, charts and lead sheets, song form, musicality and styles using sticks and brushes. We will also discuss tunes that drummers, in particular, should know. Prerequisites: knowledge of and ability to play basic jazz drumming grooves (swing, bossa nova, etc.) and intermediate technical facility.

COURSE TITLE: Intermediate to Jazz Drumming

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

An in-depth look at the musical tools, knowledge and skills needed to become a solid jazz drummer. We will look at jazz comping, soloing, charts and lead sheets, song form, musicality and styles using sticks and brushes. We will also discuss tunes that drummers, in particular, should know. Prerequisites: knowledge of and ability to play basic jazz drumming grooves (swing, bossa nova, etc.) and intermediate technical facility.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

We will develop a solid grounding in basic hand and foot technique, jazz comping independence, brush patterns and some essential Latin grooves that every jazz drummer should know. We will begin developing the reading skills and basic soloing techniques you will need to as a jazz drummer. We will be listening to numerous recordings throughout the course.

COURSE PREREQUISITES:

Intermediate technical facility.

RECOMMENDED READING/MATERIALS:

“Modern Reading Text in 4/4” by Bellson/Breines

COURSE OUTLINE:

Week 1: 4/4 jazz ostinato with jabs. intro to triplets.

Week 2: bossa nova introduced. review.

Week 3: “traveling” with triplets. groove to fill studies. review.

Week 4: bass drum exercises. hand rituals, warm-ups. review

Week 5: intro to brushes. basic slow to med slow pattern. review

Week 6: brushes continued, ballad “hook” pattern. review.

Week 7: brushes continued. up tempo “double-sided pattern”. review.

Week 8: groove switching- “2-feel”, Latin to swing, double time, 1/2 time. review

Week 9: intro to lead sheets.

Week 10: putting it all together.
