Jazz Piano Chord Voicings

Overview

Explore a wide range of jazz piano chord voicings in this new hands-on course. From simple “shell” voicings to the rich chord shapes used by Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock and other contemporary jazz masters. For pianists and instrumentalists/vocalists interested in exploring jazz piano harmony. Prerequisites: basic keyboard proficiency and knowledge of chord structures (triads and 7th chords).

COURSE TITLE:
Jazz Piano Chord Voicings

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Explore a wide range of jazz piano chord voicings in this new hands-on course. From simple “shell” voicings to the rich chord shapes used by Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock and other contemporary jazz masters. For pianists and instrumentalists/vocalists interested in exploring jazz piano harmony. Prerequisites: basic keyboard proficiency and knowledge of chord structures (triads and 7th chords).

COURSE PREREQUISITES: Thorough knowledge of major/minor scales and intervals in all keys. Familiarity with building major, minor, and dominant seventh chords.

 

REQUIRED READING/MATERIALS: n/a

 

RECOMMENDED READING/MATERIALS: Jazz Keyboard Harmony by Phil DeGreg.

 

COURSE OUTLINE:

 

Week 1 – Shell Voicings, Building Chords From a Scale, introduction to the ii-V-I.

Week 2 – Adding notes to shells to create three note rootless voicings. Practicing with idiomatic chord progressions.

Week 3 – Continued practice of three note rootless voicings, introduction to voicing a melody in solo piano (chorale) style

Week 4 – Introduction to 4-note rootless voicings, closed and open position. Minor ii-V-i’s and Sus chords.

Week 5 – Continued practice of 4-note voicings, practice with assigned tune

Week 6 – Continued practice of 4-note rootless voicings, introduction to voicing a melody in piano trio style (without roots)
