The Caribbean Ensemble features the irresistibly deep grooves of Jamaica, Trinidad, Haiti, and other islands of the West Indies. Styles may include calypso, soca, reggae, ska, zouk, biguine, and more by artists such as Lord Kitchener, Calypso Rose, The Skatalites, Bob Marley, Malavoi, Kassav, and others. Class members learn the cultural context and rhythmic structure of each tune. Emphasis is on developing the groove, listening, and locking in with each other. Open to vocalists and all instrumentalists. This ensemble is one of three consecutive classes comprising the World Groove Ensemble; students may enroll in any one or all three consecutively. Prerequisites: intermediate instrumental proficiency; ability to read charts and notation.
