Jazzschool-Online Technical Notes
All Jazzschool-Online classes meet online via Zoom. Technical requirements include: computer, tablet or phone with a reliable internet connection. Computer (laptop or desktop) is preferred, but a tablet or phone is also possible, with somewhat limited functionality. Optional for improved sound quality: external microphone, either connected via USB or XLR cable to audio interface. For a budget USB mic option, we recommend the Samson Go, currently retailing for around $50 new. Additional technical requirements are listed for specific classes below.

Beginning Bass
Get off to a strong start learning your instrument in this class covering the fundamentals of what it takes to be an effective bassist in any genre. From jazz to funk and everything in between, this class focuses on topics including, right and left-hand technique, finger dexterity, neck memorization, the parts of the bass, theory, reading, transcription and much more! Perfect for new musicians as well as seasoned instrumentalists with the desire to learn more. Prerequisites: none, open to all; students must bring a bass to class.

James Jamerson Bass Style
The Iconic Motown bassist James Jamerson is one of the most influential players of our time. This class takes a deep study into his Legendary Lines, Deep Pocket, and that Warm and Fuzzy Tone! Study excerpts from artists like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, and The Temptations. Prerequisites: intermediate level and reading ability is required for this class. Required text: Standing in the Shadows of Motown: The Life and Music of Legendary Bassist James Jamerson from your preferred online retailer.

Jaco Pastorius Bass Style
Take a look into the genius mind of legendary bassist Jaco Pastorius. From his incredible bass solos to his legendary funky bass lines, Jaco changed the game for bass and raised the bar for decades to come! This class will take a look into many of his unique techniques and bass lines including his solo works as well as excerpts from the legendary artists Weather Report, Pat Metheny, and Joni Mitchell. Prerequisites: intermediate/advanced level and good reading ability is required for this class.

Electric Bass: Tone & Technique
with Jon Herrera
In this 3-part workshop, we’ll explore the intersection of tone and technique to confidently achieve classic sounds, solidify your own voice, and get the most from your gear. While it’s crucial to understand the impact of onboard electronics, amplifier EQ, and other steps in the signal chain, it is no less important to master the array of playing techniques that are necessary to maximize your instrument’s sonic potential. Whether in the studio or onstage, this workshop will leave students with a more sophisticated understanding of their gear and effective exercises for improving a variety of essential techniques.
