Jazzschool-Online Technical Notes All Jazzschool-Online classes meet online via Zoom. Technical requirements include: computer, tablet or phone with a reliable internet connection. Computer (laptop or desktop) is preferred, but a tablet or phone is also possible, with somewhat limited functionality. Optional for improved sound quality: external microphone, either connected via USB or XLR cable to audio interface. For a budget USB mic option, we recommend the Samson Go, currently retailing for around $50 new. Additional technical requirements are listed for specific classes below.

Essential Grooves for Jazz Drummers NEW!The contemporary jazz drummer needs to be familiar with a number of grooves to be well prepared for gigs, jam sessions, or ensemble classes. This course covers all of the essentials required to build a strong foundation as a versatile time-keeper in a jazz combo setting. Includes guided listening to selected recordings, approaches to developing touch, time, feel, musicality, and more. Prerequisites: functional drum set technique.

Rudimental Snare Drum Solos NEW!In addition to classic drumming texts like Stick Control and Syncopation, Charles Wilcoxon’s Modern Rudimental Swing Solos for the Advanced Drummer has been an essential practice book for generations of jazz drummers, including Philly Joe Jones and Joe Morello. Both studied with Wilcoxon and subsequently worked from the book with their own students, leading to its widespread use in the jazz drumming community to this day. In this class, students will work from The Wilcoxon Book in the development of technique, accuracy, control and musicality. Please bring a practice pad, snare drum and sticks. The text will be provided for student use. Prerequisites: some drumming experience, some familiarity with rolls and common rudiments (paradiddle, flam, etc.)

Jazz Drumming Lineage NEW!An in-depth study and overview of the most influential jazz drummers. Spanning the history of the genre, these artists played a major part in developing the vocabulary of the drum set and its role within the modern jazz ensemble. Each session will spotlight a different drummer. We’ll listen to select recordings, analyze individual approach and sound, and discuss how each player contributed to the evolution of modern jazz drumming. Prerequisites: none, open to all.

Afro Caribbean Rhythms for Drum Set NEW!Originating in folkloric settings, the application of Afro Caribbean rhythms to the drum set in fusion, funk, jazz and other styles has developed into a rich tradition over the past several decades, exemplified by the work of contemporary masters like Ignacio Berroa, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, Dafnis Prieto and many others. In this class, we’ll study the origins of these sophisticated and entrancing rhythms developed in West Africa, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brazil and beyond, and learn to apply them to the drum set in both traditional and modern contexts. Prerequisites: functional drum set technique.

Pandeiro – Dissecting the Groove with Ami MolinelliPercussionist Ami Molinelli will discuss and demonstrate the evolution of pandeiro technique in Brazilian music. We’ll focus on the basic elements of samba and choro including swing and the tamborim ride. Because the pandeiro adapts elements of the Brazilian bass drum (surdo), shakers (ganzá) and tamborim – we will dissect the GROOVE. Please bring your own pandeiro.
