Instructor Joe Bagale also accompanies students on electric bass in class, giving participants essential hands-on experience trying out these grooves and concepts in a rhythm section context. Required text: Learn to Play the Drumset, Pete Magadini (available at the CJC Bookstore). Prerequisites: None, but bring a pair of drumsticks!

COURSE TITLE: Beginning Drum Set
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Learn to play the drum set! Essential sticking techniques, rudiments, 4-limb coordination, rhythm reading and a variety of grooves and fills are covered. Instructor Joe Bagale also accompanies students on electric bass in class, giving participants essential hands-on experience trying out these grooves and concepts in a rhythm section context.

None.
COURSE PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES:
Students learn basic coordination, reading and playing basic rhythms/drum set patterns, basic knowledge of quarter, eighth, 16th and triplets and how they function in common time.
REQUIRED READING/MATERIALS: Learn to Play the Drum Set by Pete Magadini. Student must bring a pair of drumsticks.
COURSE OUTLINE:
Week 1
teacher/student introduction; holding a drumstick, Joe’s double number snare warm up, introduction to the drum set (basic 4-piece set-up), basic rock groove concept
Week 2
basic elements of music (staff, time values, rests, bar lines, etc.)
rebound/bouncing/single stroke, patterns 1 and 2 in book
Week 3
Joe’s time value warm up (warm up #2)
introduce feet warm up #1
technique for counting different rhythms out loud
patterns 3 and 4 in book
Week 4
ideas for playing a drum fill, introduction to accents, patterns 5 and 6 in book
Week 5
double stroke roll
playing with other musicians
improvising your own drum set groove using eighth notes.
Week 6
applying 16th notes on hi-hat to basic grooves (two hand concept)
a deeper look at reading and playing 16th notes
introduction to triplets
Week 7
applying 16th notes to the bass drum (bossa nova drum groove)
Week 8
paradiddles and inverted paradiddles
Week 9
using triplets in your fills
listening and basic transcribing of drum set grooves
