Jazzschool Summer Youth Program

Jazzschool Summer Youth Program

”It was a refreshing experience to learn with kids that wanted to play music and develop as musicians as much as I did. Also the teachers were some of the best I’ve ever had. They really seemed to enjoy teaching us and put a lot of time and effort into the camp. This experience truly inspired me to continue in music.” –  Summer Youth Program Student

Open to all instrumentalists entering 7th – 10th grades

Two Five-Day Sessions!

Week 1: June 22 – 26, 2020
Week 2: July 27 – 31, 2020

Monday – Friday 9:30 am – 3 pm

All-camp performances each Friday evening at 6pm

Students develop skills in ensemble playing, music reading, improvisation, instrumental technique, rhythm, jazz theory and more.

The ensemble programs are at the core of the Summer Youth Program curriculum. In each session, students develop instrumental technique, section skills including blendintonation and phrasingear trainingreading and improvisation. The ensemble directors introduce students to a range of music drawn from jazz and related traditions, focusing both on historically important pieces (the songs we think every up and coming musician should know!) and on more contemporary material.

(Ensemble Placement Audition guidelines are posted below the audition form. Please scroll down for details!)

Placement auditions are required for all students enrolling in the Summer Youth Program. The audition allows us to place everyone in skill-level appropriate ensembles.

This year, we are encouraging participants to submit a video placement audition!

This will allow you to:

  1. record your audition in the comfort of your own home.
  2. do as many “takes” as you want until you get one you are happy with (but don’t worry about making it perfect!)
  3. record your audition at a time that is convenient for you.

It is also possible to schedule a live audition if you prefer. Just contact rob@cjc.edu or 510-845-5373 x14 to schedule a live audition at the Jazzschool.

To prepare your video audition (using a phone or other video camera/web cam) there are some simple guidelines to follow:

  1. the student should be clearly visible in the shot and their instrument should be clearly audible.
  2. begin the recording by clearly stating your name and the name of the piece you will be playing. (please see audition requirements below)
  3. videos should be no longer than 5 minutes in duration.
  4. upload your video to youtube, and email a link to the video to me at rob@cjc.edu (please make sure the video stays online until after the JSYP begins, as we will need to refer back to the video for placement periodically.) Please title your video “first and last name – instrument – JSYP”

Here are instructions on how to upload videos to youtube from various devices: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/57407?hl=en

    1. go to “youtube studio”
    2. find video and click on the options link
    3. click on get shareable link

  • send the link to rob@cjc.edu

Here are the audition requirements for various instruments:

All horns, strings, piano, vibes, guitar: Please prepare one piece of your choice that you feel represents your current level of ability. If you have experience playing jazz (in a school jazz band or similar setting) we recommend selecting a piece in that style. If you don’t have a jazz background, please prepare any piece of your choice. Improvisation is optional, if you have a piece that you would like to improvise on you are welcome to use a play along track or app (like irealpro).

Pianists and guitarists: please also demonstrate your level of chord knowledge. If you know your major, minor and dominant 7th chords please play through a few of them to demonstrate.

Drummers: please demonstrate your ability to play swing, rock, and any Latin or Brazilian grooves you know (mambo, bossa nova, etc.) at a comfortable tempo.

Bassists: please play a bassline of your choice. If you know how to play a walking bass line, please demonstrate on a 12 bar blues in the key of F.
