Today’s music world presents a unique challenge for jazz vocalists: they are faced with honoring the music of the past and presenting it in a way that connects with contemporary audiences. This course covers vocal arranging and composition techniques that bring new life into the music of the past. This includes updating standards for a more modern sound, converting popular music into a more jazz-hued setting and, finally, original compositions drawing on modern jazz techniques. Elements of vocal technique are discussed and repertoire is selected for performance. Students work with a professional accompanist and there is a final performance open to the public. For experienced vocalists.
