Associate Professor

Drum and Percussion Chair, Oakland School for the Arts. Recipient of a California Arts Council grant leading to a 20-year teaching residency at La Peña Cultural Center, Berkeley. Rhythm sectional leader 20 years with Berkeley High School jazz program (BHS Jazz). Co-teaches classes with master percussionist José Eladio at La ENA in Havana, Cuba for BHS Jazz students and others. On faculty at Stanford Jazz Workshop, Jazz Camp West and Cazadero; adjudicator at collegiate jazz competitions. Recognized international touring and recording artist with Don Cherry, Steve Coleman and Omar Sosa. Performances and recordings with Latin jazz artists include Chuchito Valdes, Yosvany Terry, Carlos del Puerto, Kali Rodriguez, Nestor Torres and Mezcla, Yosvany Terry & Columna B, Grupo AfroCuba de Matanzas, Chico Freeman, Arthur Blythe, Benny Green, Peter Apfelbaum, Steve Bernstein, Nels Cline, Larry Coryell, Calvin Keys, Phil Ranglin, Legally Blynd, Tupac Shakur, Zion-I, Boots Riley and The Coup, Goapele, and the La Missión Soundtrack. Also performed with Zakir Hussein, Giovanni Hidalgo, Ravi Coltrane, Von Freeman, Dafnis Prieto, Ed Simon, John Hicks, Dave Murray, Gene Lake, Reggie Washington, Sean Rickman, Adam Benjamin, Ben Wendel, Shane Endsley, Ralph Alessi, Amiri Baraka, George Cables, John Gilmore, Woody “Sonship” Theus, Gahsem Batamuntu, OJ Ekemode, Marshall Allen, Muhal Richard Abrams, June Tyson, Henry Butler, Will Bernard, Joey DeFrancesco, Hassan Hakmood, Ambrose Akinmusire, Charlie Hunter, Fred Hopkins, Okay Temiz, DJ Fuze, DJ Spinna, and Mind Motion.
