CJC’s Giving Tuesday* Initiative: “Riding the Wave” and KCJC Internet Radio Station
The California Jazz Conservatory seeks to raise $25,000 to underwrite the cost of launching “Riding the Wave” and KCJC, in fall, 2023.
In the spirit of WBCN-FM, Boston’s radical underground rock radio station that impacted the social, political, and cultural changes of the 1960s and 70s, KCSM luminaries Jayn Pettingill and Melanie Berzon team up to launch “Riding the Wave” – a twofold project combining a hands-on in-studio humanities course culminating in an innovative new internet jazz radio station: KCJC. “Riding the Wave” is dedicated to the dissemination of the original American art form, jazz, through a medium that encompasses the arts, cultural thought and values, a driver of change and one of the first influencers of popular music and style. The course is in honor and memory of “The Dean of Boston Jazz Radio” Eric Jackson, of WBCN and WGBH, who died in September 2022.
This project will have a broad and long-lasting impact on our Bay Area community: it will serve as a hands-on training ground for the next generation of radio broadcasters; provide insight into the history of radio and the role it played in popularizing jazz; and also interface with the most pressing social and political issues of the day. Featured guest lecturers will include Clifford Brown Jr., Greg Bridges, Lee Thomas and others.
CJC has evolved from its early beginnings as a community music school to aninstitutionally accredited music conservatory, offering AA, BM, and MM degrees in Jazz Studies. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the California Jazz Conservatory is positioned as the only music school in the country solely devoted to the study and performance of the African American treasured art form, jazz.
Over the past 25 years, your continued support of our mission has been indispensable – especially considering the many challenges the school has faced and will surely face in the years ahead. We are committed to supporting and promoting the jazz art form based on what Dr. Anthony Brown has described as “a twentieth-century urban dance music that has become globally celebrated as a cultural art form embodying the ideals of freedom and democracy.”
A gift of any amount will make a significant difference to forwarding this ground-breaking new project. For example:
The California Jazz Conservatory wishes to express its tremendous gratitude for the outpouring of support over the past 25 years. We thank you in advance for giving us the opportunity to embark on our next quarter of a century.
