THE JAZZSCHOOL AT CJC

Virtual Performance Ensembles

Jazzschool-Online Technical Notes
All Jazzschool-Online classes meet online via Zoom. Technical requirements include: computer, tablet or phone with a reliable internet connection. Computer (laptop or desktop) is preferred, but a tablet or phone is also possible, with somewhat limited functionality. Optional for improved sound quality: external microphone, either connected via USB or XLR cable to audio interface. For a budget USB mic option, we recommend the Samson Go, currently retailing for around $50 new. Additional technical requirements are listed for specific classes below.

Jazzschool-Online Virtual Performance Ensembles combine online class meetings, using Zoom, with collaborative web-based recording projects, using an online digital audio workstation (DAW) called Soundtrap. The ensembles do not play together in real-time, but rather, build arrangements collectively through a process of overdubbing. Open to all instrumentalists and vocalists.

A consultation and/or audition is required for placement in all Jazzschool ensembles. Please fill out and submit the ensemble application form at the bottom of this page. Once your application is received, Jazzschool staff will contact you to schedule an online consultation.

Angie Doctor

Virtual Choir
You’ve seen all the virtual choirs on the internet recently––here’s your chance to be part of one! This is a fun and creative way to sing “with” others while learning how to record music at home. Come sing together while we’re apart! At the end of the session, you’ll have a recording of your own virtual ensemble and will have learned some new ways to create music with others. Students must be independent singers, able to learn and understand the technology, and love to sing in harmony. The song choice will be decided based on the enrollment, the interest of the students, and the teacher’s recommendation. We will create an ensemble recording using Soundtrap, a collaborative, web-based recording program, much like GarageBand, but with chat and video communication available within the program. In combination with Zoom as a meeting space, students contribute to a recording in Soundtrap with coaching and guidance from the teacher. Prerequisites: Open to intermediate to advanced students. Singers who have already participated in the Virtual Choir are welcome to re-enroll. If you are interested in joining the choir, please email Angie for audition guidelines: adoctor@cjc.edu.
